KID’S CORNER
FUN INFORMATION – for all ages!
Einstein is a Great Horned Owl. Did you know that these owls are named for the tufts of feathers on their heads that look like horns? He is also known as Tiger Owl because he was described by early naturalists as a “winged tiger” or “tiger of the air.” The Great Horned Owl is one of North America’s largest raptors, meaning he is a bird of prey. His diet consists of other birds and small mammals including the skunk! Yuck!!!
Here’s some fun facts about Einstein:
- He has incredible hearing, and a head that can rotate 270°. (If a full circle is 360o, what percentage is that? Here’s a clue – it’s more than halfway!) How far can you turn your head?
- He has large yellow eyes and binocular vision- he can see his prey perfectly in the dark.
- He only weighs three to 5.5 pounds and but has a wingspan of around 4.5 feet. His wings facilitate silent hunting because they have soft edges, enabling him to fly silently while hunting his quarry.
- Since he’s nocturnal and is usually hunting at night while you are sleeping, you probably won’t see him, but sometimes you can hear him after the sun sets. Can you guess what he says? That’s right – he really does say, “Whoo-whoo-whoo.”

Everyone thinks that owls are wise, and as birds go, they do look very wise. But did you know that wisdom comes from only one source, God?
“For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.” – Proverbs 2:6

The heart of Words of Wisdom (WOW) Family Ministry is to set up scholarship funds for one or more homeschool graduates each year in memory of deceased veteran homeschool moms. to be used for further education, mission work, or entrepreneur endeavors. We will be sharing valuable information, inspiring stories, and quotes from the first two veteran homeschool moms who we have lost in the last couple of years. These two moms are Mary Hood and Joani Rhodes. We are also working on publishing Legacy Series books about each of these well-loved, influential pioneers of the homeschooling movement. They were on the front lines in the late 1970’s and early ‘80’s and paved the way for all of us. Their stories are not only inspiring, but crucial for today’s homeschoolers in laying a strong foundation and making sure that we never lose sight of “the heart of homeschooling.”

Comment from Lani Carey: This statement made by Mary at the first homeschool curriculum fair I ever attended in the mid-1990’s changed my life! I had begun to get discouraged about the whole “homeschooling” adventure, but when I heard Mary say this in a workshop she was doing, I KNEW that I could successfully homeschool – after all, I did have a library card and a Bible!!! I have shared this with SO many homeschool parents over the years in my own workshops, and my prayer is that it continues to encourage parents throughout the years.
Words of Wisdom from Mary: For those homeschooling or considering it: As a person who has been involved in the movement since the early 1980s, I’m seeing a disturbing trend. With the large increase of homeschoolers, many of whom came in without much knowledge of how things work, there is a corresponding increase of people trying to make money off homeschoolers. You must be discerning when selecting materials! Remember that there is NO NEED to have all your ducks in a row at the start of the school year. There is NO NEED to purchase a complete set of curriculum materials from one source and there is NO NEED to be “accredited”. Start by chilling out for awhile, going to the library, getting to know each other in the learning environment, following some of their own interests, and the rest can come a little at a time! There is also NO NEED to spend one penny right at the start!!
